Fuel-Efficient Stove Review |
|
A programmatic review of Fuel Efficient Stove (FES) projects in the three states of Darfur, Sudan.Project dates: March - October 2008 ProAct Network is currently assisting CHF International and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) in undertaking a programmatic review of Fuel Efficient Stove (FES) projects in the three states of Darfur, Sudan. The review will examine the full range of FES projects being implemented from the perspective of institutional approaches, efficiency and effectiveness. FES projects have been introduced in Darfur where a total of almost one million people have been displaced by the conflict and the main source of energy remains fuelwood. | Field level data was gathered as part of the review through a range of tools that included key informant and household surveys, as well as focus groups discussions. Here an introductory meeting is being held with Sheikhs and Omdas in Ardamata IDP Camp in Geneina, West Darfur. G. Wroe-Street/ProAct Network | The sheer concentration of people in camps has heightened the localised environmental impact of fuelwood collection. One feature of the current conflict has been the high levels of gender-based violence directed against women leaving camps or villages to collect fuelwood. By highlighting lessons learned from the field and suggesting improvements based on the collective experience of agencies across Darfur this review is expected to assist in improving the design and implementation of FES projects in Darfur and elsewhere in the Sudan. For this programme, ProAct has developped a data collection tool (FES Toolkit) for gathering information in the field. | | ProAct will be giving a presentation at the conference: “Beyond Firewood: Exploring Alternative Fuels and Energy Technologies in Humanitarian Settings”. This conference is organised by the Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children and will be held on December 11-12 in New Delhi, India. | For more information please contact:
