Support ProAct in our Strategic Areas of Work
Helping people and communities address the environment-related problems and issues they face is an underlying principle of our work. We believe that building and strengthening peoples' capacity at this level is what will make a difference in the long-term.
Please help us – and them – achieve this goal. Your support would be much appreciated. Thank You.
Working with Nature for Disaster Risk Reduction
As well as providing us with products essential to life and livelihoods - food, fuel, medicine and construction materials - ecosystems act as natural, dynamic barriers that can help protect people from natural hazards and the impacts of climate change.
Sound environmental management can reduce the scale and occurrence of certain disasters. The destruction of ecosystems, such as floodplains and forests, is endangering those communities that are most vulnerable to the effects of climate change and natural hazards.
ProAct is actively pushing for more wide-scale and informed use and protection of ecosystems to strengthen community and environmental resilience. Our projects combine practical on-the-ground disaster risk reduction with research by leading eco-engineering experts.
Help People Stay at Home
Millions and millions of people risk having to leave their homes on account of climate change. To date, discussion has largely centred on what to call these people and how many there are likely to be. ProAct, however, sees an urgent need for more practical and tangible action to be taken on the ground to actually prevent people from having to leave their homes in the first instance.
Working with local rural communities, we aim to build their resilience to slow onset climate change by helping people understand why change is taking place and how they might adapt to such change, and by developing more robust systems of livelihoods based on sound environmental management.
The predicted and already apparent impacts of climate change are global but most severe for poor and vulnerable populations. However, too little attention continues to be given to addressing climate change in a proactive manner, in particular with regards climate-related disasters.
Climate change is a cross-cutting theme is all areas of ProAct's work. We focus in particular on community-based adaptation, knowledge sharing, capacity building and technology transfer. We also promote sound environmental management and emphasise the synergies between climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction.
In addition, ProAct provides institutional support and guidance on climate adaptation for field practitioners in humanitarian and relief operations, as they need to adapt activities to the changing environment to ensure the scale and sustainability of interventions.
